演題： What happens when insects freeze and thaw (again and again...)?

Most laboratory studies of insect cold tolerance have focused on a single cold exposure event. However, it is clear that in the field, insects are exposed to multiple stress events. It is becoming apparent that these repeated exposures can have unexpected effects. I will discuss the background of studies of repeated stress exposure and plasticity in insect cold tolerance and develop some testable hypotheses that provide a framework for considering repeated stress exposure. I will then highlight ongoing work in my laboratory with Drosophila, lepidoptera and an invasive beetle and discuss the applied and theoretical implications of our findings.
演者紹介： Brent Sinclair博士は2001年にニュージーランドのオタゴ大で、高山や南極に棲む節足動物の生理生態学についての研究で学位を取りました。『極限環境の生命―生物のすみかのひろがり』（シュプリンガーフェアラーク東京）の著者で知られるD.A. Wharton博士の研究室出身です。その後、ポスドクとして南アフリカやアメリカ合衆国などの大学を経て、３年前に現在の大学の assistant professorになりました。これまで彼が実験に用いた動物はキイロショウジョウバエも含めて様々ですが、一貫して低温に関連したテーマの研究をしています。今回の講演では低温の極限として凍結の話題を取り上げます。昆虫を凍らせたり解凍したり、それを何度も繰り返されても生きている昆虫 はいるのでしょうか。
