The Zoological Society of Japan is an academic society aimed at the advance and dissemination of animal scientific research. Members, starting with researchers and graduate students affiliated with universities and research institutes, consist of teaching staff at elementary, middle and high schools, and the number of members have reached 2,700.

The technical fields of members encompass many of the biological sciences targeted at animals such as taxonomy, phylogenetics, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology, embryology, genetics, ecology and praxiology. When looking at the departments of members belonging to universities, in addition to science and education departments, they cover all science departments such as agriculture, medical, dental, pharmaceutical and engineering departments. This is because biological science, including animal science, has rapidly achieved advancement, along with the importance of animal science is understood and has received extensive support.
