Its membership of 2,700 includes researchers and graduate students affiliated with universities and research institutes, as well as elementary, junior high, and high school teachers. The members' fields of expertise cover a wide range of biological sciences focused on animals, including taxonomy, phylogeny, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology, embryology, genetics, ecology, and ethology. Looking at the university faculties to which members belong, they span all science-related departments, including faculties of science and education, as well as agriculture, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and engineering. This is likely due to the rapid development of biological sciences, including zoology, as well as a growing understanding and widespread support for the importance of zoological science.

The founding of this academic society dates back very early among basic science societies. It can be traced back to the Tokyo Biological Society, established in 1878 (Meiji 11) by Edward S. Morse, the first Professor of Zoology at the University of Tokyo—famous for his discovery of the Omori Shell Mound—alongside Yatabe Ryokichi, the Professor of Botany at the time. Afterwards, the name was changed to the Tokyo Zoological Society in 1885 (Meiji 18), and renamed once again as the Zoological Society of Japan in 1923 (Taisho 12). Following its incorporation as a corporate juridical person in 1993 (Heisei 5) and as a public interest incorporated association in 2012 (Heisei 24), it continues to the present day.

The Society carries out various activities to widely publicize research results and make them the property of humankind. At the annual scientific meeting held every autumn, not only do members give academic lectures, but in recent years we have also established a session for presenting the research results of biology clubs in junior high and high schools. By creating opportunities for questions and discussions between members and the students, we are striving to develop science education as well. Furthermore, the Society's branches individually hold scientific meetings and organize open lectures across various regions, striving to convey the latest results of zoological science to the general public in an easy-to-understand manner. In addition, we regularly publish the English-language international academic journal Zoological Science. Zoological Science traces its origins back to the "Dobutsugaku Zasshi" (Zoological Magazine) founded in 1888 (Meiji 21), and it enjoys a high international reputation, featuring numerous cutting-edge research papers from researchers both in Japan and abroad.

The 21st century is likely an era to examine the impact that the development of industrial science, which mankind promoted in the 20th century, has had on the earth, and to further ensure the survival of mankind. A wide variety of organisms continue to survive within various global environments on the earth. This biodiversity indicates that the "wisdom for survival" acquired by organisms through a long process of evolution is diverse. It is necessary for mankind to learn the ways of life of these diverse organisms and make use of them for the future. As a pioneer in this endeavor, our academic society has proposed the "Gaia List 21" project, and we are planning and striving toward the realization of investigating and preserving overall life activities by utilizing the advanced approaches of modern biology.

Secretariat of the Zoological Society of Japan
4th Floor, Hongo MT Building, 7-2-2 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033
Phone: 03-3814-5461 Fax: 03-3814-6216
Contact:zsj-society@zoology.or.jp
Contact us

["post-18","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
