

{"id":1678,"date":"2019-06-03T20:05:08","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T11:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zoology.or.jp\/?p=1678"},"modified":"2019-06-03T20:31:00","modified_gmt":"2019-06-03T11:31:00","slug":"2015%e5%b9%b4%e5%ba%a6%e8%ab%96%e6%96%87%e8%b3%9e-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zoology.or.jp\/english\/archives\/1678","title":{"rendered":"2015 Paper Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following deliberation by the Editorial Board of Zoological Science and subsequent review by the Council of the Zoological Society of Japan, it has been decided to present the Zoological Science Award 2015 to the following five papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">[Selection Progress Report]<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> On April 9, 2015, an email was sent to 14 Associate Editors and 33 Advisory Board Members of Zoological Science, requesting them to recommend candidate papers (up to approximately three papers published in 2014, with a recommendation deadline of May 22). By May 22, a total of 49 recommendations were received from 1 Editor-in-Chief, 14 Associate Editors, and 3 Advisory Board Members, resulting in 30 unique papers excluding duplicates. Based on this list of recommended papers, the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors reviewed the papers\u2014focusing on those with numerous recommendations, the validity and significance of their scientific content, and their remarkable contribution to zoology\u2014and reported the following five papers to the Board of Directors as candidates for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">[Award-Winning Paper]<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Rhinoceros Beetles Suffer Male-Biased Predation by Mammalian and Avian Predators<br> Wataru Kojima, Shinji Sugiura, Hiroshi Makihara, Yukio Ishikawa and Takuma Takanashi<br> Zoological Science 31(3): 109\u2013115<br> Ornaments showing sexually dimorphic development, which are well-developed in males, are generally interpreted as advantageous from the perspective of sexual selection but disadvantageous for survival. However, few studies have demonstrated that ornaments are disadvantageous for survival. The authors conducted field surveys and field experiments on Japanese rhinoceros beetles and reported data showing that males experience higher predation pressure. They also identified the major predators. This is consistent with the hypothesis that ornamented males are at a disadvantage for survival and provides valuable foundational information for understanding the evolutionary mechanism of the horns of rhinoceros beetles, which are familiar to Japanese people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea Lily Muscle Lacks a Troponin-Regulatory System, While it Contains Paramyosin. <br>\nTakashi Obinata, Shonan Amemiya, Ryosuke Takai, Muneyoshi Ichikawa, Yoko Y. Toyoshima and Naruki Sato. <br>\nZoological Science 31(3): 122\u2013128<br>\nTroponin is a contraction-regulatory protein in striated muscle that is present in chordates and protostomes, but absent in echinoderms such as sea urchins and sea cucumbers. This paper confirms the absence of troponin in sea lilies, which are said to be the most primitive extant echinoderms. At the same time, it reveals that paramyosin, a muscle protein that does not exist beyond chordates, is present in sea lilies along with protostomes. This is an interesting paper showing that echinoderms, despite being deuterostomes, have a unique muscle protein composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Segment Regeneration in the Vestimentiferan Tubeworm, Lamellibrachia satsuma <br>\nNorio Miyamoto, Ayuta Shinozaki and Yoshihiro Fujiwara<br>\nZoological Science 31(8): 535\u2013541<br>\nA study that closely observed the regeneration process of tubeworms, which possess a unique body plan, and investigated the expression pattern of the engrailed gene during regeneration. It is an important paper that laid the foundation for tubeworm regeneration research and established Lamellibrachia satsuma as a model system for studying the evolution of regeneration and the tubeworm body plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDouble-Trick Visual and Chemical Mimicry by the Juvenile Orchid Mantis Hymenopus coronatus used in Predation of the Oriental Honeybee Apis cerana <br>\nTakafumi Mizuno, Susumu Yamaguchi, Ichiro Yamamoto, Ryohei Yamaoka and Toshiharu Akino<br>\nZoological Science 31(12): 795\u2013801<br>\nThis study elucidates the remarkable characteristics of the orchid mantis, an insect that has undergone a fascinating evolution.
