Following deliberation, the Board of Directors decided to present the 2014 Paper Award to the following six papers. The total prize money is 300,000 yen, with a supplementary prize of 50,000 yen awarded for each paper this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:right\">Kiyokazu Agata, President, The Zoological Society of Japan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Award-winning papers of 2014 (in order of publication)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Static and Dynamic Hypergravity Responses of Osteoblasts and Osteoclasts in Medaka Scales <br>\nSachiko Yano, Kei-ichiro Kitamura, Yusuke Satoh, Masaki Nakano, Atsuhiko Hattori, Toshio Sekiguchi, Mika Ikegame, Hiroshi Nakashima, Katsunori Omori, Kazuichi Hayakawa, Atsuhiko Chiba, Yuichi Sasayama, Sadakazu Ejiri, Yuko Mikuni-Takagaki, Hiroyuki Mishima, Hisayuki Funahashi, Tatsuya Sakamoto and Nobuo Suzuki<br>\np(s) 217\u2013223<br>\nThis paper proves that, similarly to bone, medaka scales contain both osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and it describes the development of a culture system used to analyze the mechanism by which bone undergoes osteogenesis in response to gravity. It is worthy of a paper award for being the first to prove that responses to static and dynamic hypergravity differ, as well as for its implications for the advancement of astrobiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fishermen Were Right: Experimental Evidence for Tributary Refuge Hypothesis During Floods Full Access <br>\nItsuro Koizumi, Yukiyo Kanazawa and Yuuki Tanaka<br>\npp. 375\u2013379<br>\nA study that demonstrated the commonly accepted theory that fish seek refuge in river tributaries during floods, set in a river with periodic dam releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genetic Diversity and Structure in the Sado Captive Population of the Japanese Crested Ibis Full Access <br>\nKensuke Urano, Kanako Tsubono, Yukio Taniguchi, Hirokazu Matsuda, Takahisa Yamada, Toshie Sugiyama, Kosuke Homma, Yoshinori Kaneko, Satoshi Yamagishi and Hiroaki Iwaisaki<br>\npp. 432\u2013438<br>\nThis examines the genetic structure and diversity of the crested ibises introduced to Sado, which is important from the perspective of conservation ecology and is also likely to attract the interest of the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olfactory Homing of Chum Salmon to Stable Compositions of Amino Acids in Natal Stream Water <br>\nYuzo Yamamoto, Hideaki Shibata and Hiroshi Ueda<br>\np(s) 607\u2013612<br>\nBased on the finding published by the authors in 2009 that water-soluble amino acid concentration is the key odor substance for salmon homing, we analyzed the seasonal fluctuations of amino acid composition in river water using the Teshio River system, where chum salmon migrate, as the field. Of the 19 amino acids detected, 5 to 7 were found to have nearly identical concentrations in the spring, when fry downstream migrate, and in the autumn, when adult fish migrate upstream. As a result of behavioral experiments in a two-choice flume using male chum salmon that migrated up the Teshio River, more individuals were attracted to artificial water mimicking the amino acid concentrations of the spring and autumn seasons of the Teshio River system. Furthermore, electroolfactogram analysis revealed that the fish distinguish between the spring and autumn artificial waters. This paper is an important study that clarifies from both behavioral and physiological aspects that salmon homing occurs by memorizing the composition of water-soluble amino acids that fluctuate little between spring and autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self and Nonself Recognition in a Marine Sponge, Halichondria japonica (Demospongiae) <br>\nYasunori Saito<br>\npp. 651\u2013657<br>\nThis paper analyzes the contact rejection process between two types of allogeneic individuals using tissue fragments cut from the orange sponge (Tedania ignis), analyzes the behavior of mesohyl cells in the recognition response, and also compares it with the xenogeneic rejection response to tissue fragments of the black sponge (Haliclona permollis). Providing information on the existence of self\/non-self recognition ability and its recognition mode in sponges, which are the most primitive multicellular animals, is important for considering the evolution of this function and is worthy of a paper award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Development of the Chondrocranium in Hagfishes, with Special Reference to the Early Evolution of Vertebrates <br>\nYasuhiro Oisi, Kinya G.
