It is particularly significant for its careful documentation of amphioxus metamorphosis and subsequent development, notably the increase and development of gill slits. By enabling the indoor mass culture of amphioxus, this work paves the way for various studies in embryology, physiology, and other fields, and is expected to make a major contribution to zoology as a whole.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) A Taxonomic Catalogue of Japanese Nemerteans (Phylum Nemertea)    <br>\nHiroshi Kajihara     <br>\nZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE 24: 287-326 (2007)    <br>\nTaxonomy\/Review <br>\nThis paper is an extremely meticulous taxonomic catalog that provides a comprehensive and exhaustive collection of literature on the classification of Japanese nemerteans. It also provides a well-organized overview of the history of nemertean taxonomy, complete with a taxonomic checklist and a complete bibliography. As an optimal and outstanding review for researchers of nemerteans, it will likely be cited for generations to come as a legacy in the field. Review papers synthesizing such research and its results are a precious asset to foundational zoology in Japan and across Asia.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3) Inheritance Pattern of Lateral Dimorphism in Two Cichlids (a Scale Eater, Perissodus microlepis, and an Herbivore, Neolamprologus moorii) in Lake Tanganyika    <br>\nMichio Hori, Haruki Ochi and Masanori Kohda    <br>\nZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE 24: 486-492 (2007)    <br>\nGenetics<br>\nThe fact that the right- and left-types of scale-eating fish are maintained at equal frequencies is now becoming a classic even in textbooks around the world. However, the determination of the genetic system for the two morphs was hindered by numerous difficulties and long remained in the realm of assumption. Using other scale-eating and algae-eating cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika, this paper establishes through breeding experiments the fact that the left-type is dominant to the right-type at a single locus, and that the dominant homozygote is lethal. It is also worthy of note that while genes are often not involved in coexisting left-right morphs, this is the first case in which the genetic basis has been determined. This is a valuable paper that proves the genetic background of an important discovery in evolutionary biology.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4) Serotonin-immunoreactive Neurons in the Antennal Sensory System of the Brain in the Carpenter Ant, Camponotus japonicas    <br>\nEriko Tsuji, Hitoshi Aonuma, Fumio Yokohari and Michiko Nishikawa    <br>\nZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE 24: 836\u2013849 (2007)    <br>\nNeurobiology <br>\nThis paper details the morphology of serotonin-immunoreactive neurons receiving inputs from the antennae in the brains of workers of the Japanese carpenter ant, a eusocial insect, and clearly explains complex data with beautiful illustrations. These are thought to be related to olfaction and gustation.
