Dear Members of the Zoological Society
The 88th Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan was held from September 21 (Thu) to 23 (Sat), 2017, with the Toyama Prefectural Civic Center as the main venue. According to the secretariat and respective departments, there were 843 conference participants, a total of 196 junior and senior high school students and accompanying teachers, 360 general public participants in the Zoology Plaza, and 82 participants in the public lecture. We sincerely thank everyone for such a large turnout. Because a press release outlining the society and the conference was sent to four local media outlets the day before the conference, local newspapers and other media featured coverage of the event on the first and second days. Partly due to this, the events on the third day of the conference were particularly bustling, and coverage of the third day was also published in the local newspaper the day after the conference ended.
At the conference, presentations included 107 open-call symposium abstracts (20 sessions), 19 related meeting abstracts (6 sessions), 4 headquarters-sponsored lectures, 272 oral presentations, and 209 poster presentations. Additionally, poster presentations by junior and senior high school students featured 60 abstracts from 38 schools nationwide. While there were two or three connection issues in the oral presentation rooms, the conference headquarters received no other major issues or complaints regarding the main venue. For the banquet, we had prepared food intended to accommodate the advance registrations; however, we had a considerable number of on-site registrations and walk-ins during the event. As a result of having many attendees, including a large number of young members, the food was consumed much faster than we anticipated. We sincerely apologize that some attendees were unable to fully enjoy Toyama's local cuisine. On the other hand, since we offered a wide selection of Toyama's local sake, we hope that Japanese sake enthusiasts were able to find their favorite brands. We assume there may have been other points or opinions you noticed regarding the conference, and we would greatly appreciate it if you could let us know for future improvements.
We have been preparing for this convention since around the autumn of 2014, three years ago, when Toyama was first nominated as a potential venue. The organizing committee consisted of a total of 15 members: 6 members and 2 non-members affiliated with the University of Toyama, along with 7 members from other universities in the Chubu Branch (3 from Kanazawa University, 1 from Gifu University, 1 from Shizuoka University, 1 from Shinshu University, and 1 from Nagoya University). This event was made possible with the generous support of the headquarters and the Chubu Branch of the society. The Toyama convention was the second of its kind, held 30 years after the 58th convention in 1987. I still vividly remember participating in the 58th convention as a first-year doctoral student and recklessly giving an oral presentation while still in the middle of purifying a protein (pituitary hormone). After the convention, I also recklessly climbed to the summit of Mt. Oyama in Tateyama in casual clothes with people I had just met for the first time.
With the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the compact city development of central Toyama City is progressing day by day, and frequent visitors to Toyama must have been surprised by this transformation. Many of you likely visited places within walking distance of the main venue, such as the Matsukawa River banks, Toyama Castle Park, Fugan Unga Kansui Park, the world's most beautiful Starbucks, and the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design. Toyama is also said to be the number one prefecture for livability, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Toyama again.
Finally, I would like to express my renewed gratitude to everyone who participated in the Toyama Conference. I also want to extend my sincere thanks to the members of the organizing committee, the student part-time workers who worked despite the summer vacation, the secretariat of the academic society for encouraging our inexperienced organizing committee and providing thoughtful care throughout the conference, the vendors who facilitated the convention preparations, and the companies that provided cooperation such as sponsorships and corporate exhibitions. Finally, I would like to thank the Toyama Convention Bureau for their support of the conference.
Next year's conference will be held in Sapporo, with member Masakane Yamashita of Hokkaido University serving as the conference organizing committee chair. While hoping that it will be a successful event bringing together members, high school students, and citizens, I am already looking forward to reuniting with everyone in Sapporo.
