Although zoology consists of a wide range of academic fields, most of the applicants were outstanding researchers representing their respective fields, and they met the criteria stated in the selection regulations: \"researchers who have achieved academically extremely beneficial results that make an important and remarkable contribution to the progress and development of zoology.\" As a result, the deliberation was conducted at a high standard. Although the selection was extremely difficult, after detailed deliberation on the applicants' research content, research achievements, and contribution to the progress and development of zoology, it was decided to recommend two candidates to the Board of Directors.<span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yoshitaka Oka, Professor, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo<\/strong><br><strong>Research theme: Study on peptide neuronal systems involved in the central control of reproduction<\/strong><br><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reasons for the Recommendation<br>Member Yoshitaka Oka has conducted world-leading research on the control mechanisms of reproduction by the central nervous system, using fish as a model. In particular, driven by an interest in the mechanisms of coordination between the nervous system and the endocrine system, he has achieved outstanding results through original research on the interactions between gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons and a novel peptidergic neuron system called kisspeptin in the hypothalamus, as well as their interactions with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal endocrine system that governs vertebrate reproduction. Recently, anticipating the importance of the neural networks formed by these two neural systems, he has been conducting internationally cutting-edge research on peptidergic neuron systems involved in the central control of reproduction, using medaka\u2014which offers numerous advantages as an experimental animal, such as genomic databases and transgenic technology\u2014as material. Thus, Member Oka stands at the forefront, leading zoology not only in Japan but around the world. We determined that Member Oka's research, which has greatly contributed to the development of zoology, is worthy of the Society Award and nominated him as a candidate.<span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kenji Tomioka, Professor, Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University<\/strong><br><strong>Research topic: \"Neurobiological studies on the circadian clock mechanism in insects\"<\/strong><br><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reasons for the Recommendation<br>Member Kenji Tomioka has made remarkable contributions to elucidating the insect circadian clock mechanism by making full use of neurobiological techniques. Among them, his research demonstrating that the main body of the circadian clock oscillation resides in the optic lobes, by recording the electrical output from the optic lobes of crickets under cultured conditions, is particularly noteworthy. Furthermore, he expanded his research to address questions such as how a pair of left and right clocks coordinate to generate rhythms. In addition, he was the first in the world to discover that different circadian clock cells divide roles to synchronize with the environment in Drosophila. Recently, he has been conducting research to explore the evolutionary process of clocks from the molecular mechanisms of primitive insects' circadian clocks, and research to elucidate the role of clock genes in photoperiodism using RNAi. Member Tomioka not only publishes these achievements in top-tier international journals but also writes numerous reviews, playing an active role internationally as one of Japan's leading chronobiologists.
