Award for Excellence in Zoological Education

The Zoological Society of Japan has established the "Zoological Education Award." The purpose of this award is to honor individuals or organizations that have made remarkable contributions to the dissemination of zoology to society through active public enlightenment activities and to recognize their achievements.

Zoological Society of Japan Award for Excellence in Zoological Education Selection Regulations

Article 1 This award is established based on Article 4, Article 5, Paragraph 1, Item 4 of the Articles of Incorporation of the Zoological Society of Japan, a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, and Article 12 of the Bylaws. The name of the award shall be the Education Award by the Zoological Society of Japan.

Article 2. This award is intended to honor individuals or organizations that have made remarkable contributions to the dissemination of zoology to society through active educational and promotional activities, and to recognize their achievements.

Article 3 Eligibility for the award shall be open to both members and non-members of this academic society.

Article 4. Candidates for this award shall be nominated by members of this society.

Article 5. Nominators for candidates for this award must submit application forms in accordance with the regulations established by the Zoological Education Award Selection Committee.

Article 6 Public applications for this prize shall be conducted once a year by the Zoology Education Prize Selection Committee.

Article 7. The selection committee for this prize shall, in principle, submit one candidate to the Zoological Society of Japan Board of Directors, and the Board of Directors shall deliberate and determine the recipient.

Article 8. A certificate and supplementary prize shall be awarded to the winners of this award.

Supplementary Provisions
1. The selection criteria for the winners of this award shall be established as follows.
Fostering familiarity with living organisms is the starting point of biology education. In view of this, regardless of whether or not they have achievements in research activities, individuals or organizations recognized for making significant contributions to the education and dissemination of zoology as described below shall be eligible for the award.

• 1) Individuals whose efforts are deemed worthy of high praise, such as those who have organized or conducted lectures, public speeches, experiments (exercises), nature observation events, etc., targeted at elementary, junior high, and high school students as well as working adults over many years, or university faculty members engaged in outreach activities for zoology outside the university.
• (2) Persons who have made significant contributions to the dissemination of zoological knowledge and theories through educational, publishing, and other activities, and to the permeation of those results into the general public.
• 3) Others (for example, individuals recognized for making significant, long-standing contributions to the promotion of projects such as the Biology Olympiad).
• 4) The decision on whether to select individuals whose primary activity is for commercial purposes as award candidates shall be left to the discretion of the Zoology Education Award Selection Committee.

2. Present a supplementary prize of 50,000 yen to the recipient of the Zoology Education Award.
3. These Regulations shall come into effect on December 1, 2012.
