Myohara Mariko Research Encouragement Grant

The Michiko Myuhara Research Encouragement Grant was established through a donation made in accordance with the wishes of Michiko Myuhara, a member of the Zoological Society who passed away suddenly in May 2015. To fulfill her living wishes, the grant aims to provide research funding to individuals who are engaged in basic biology (zoology) research, are conducting sound basic research, but are not necessarily blessed with ample research funds. Since 2020, the grant has awarded 500,000 yen in research encouragement funds to three researchers annually.

This is intended for researchers who are planning and conducting important basic biological research and who have not received any external funding as a principal investigator or co-investigator in the fiscal year of application (regular fiscal year). Applications are widely invited, not limited to members of this academic society.

Regulations on the Grant of the Mihara Mariko Research Encouragement Subsidy

(Purpose)
Article 1 The purpose of these Regulations is to provide necessary matters concerning grants (hereinafter referred to as "grants") to be provided to those eligible for the research grant projects stipulated in Article 4 and Article 5, Paragraph 1, Item 6 of the Articles of Incorporation of the Zoological Society of Japan (hereinafter referred to as the "Society").

(Eligibility for Grant)
Article 2. In light of the wishes of the late Makiro Myohara, a member of this academic society, the subsidies based on these regulations shall be provided for the following:
(1) Researchers conducting exceptional research in fundamental biology (zoology) who have difficulty securing sufficient research funding from sources other than this grant.

(Solicitation and Qualifications of Applicants)

Article 3. The method of recruiting grant applicants (hereinafter referred to as "applicants") shall be by public invitation.

2 Applicants must be individual researchers who are employed by a Japanese university or other research institution and are engaged in research activities as their primary occupation (including professors, associate professors, lecturers, assistant professors, researchers, etc., but excluding graduate students and the like).

3 Regardless of the provisions of the preceding paragraph, persons listed in each of the following items shall not be subject to selection.
(1) Those who are directors, auditors, or selection committee members of this academic society, and their relatives within the third degree of kinship
(2) Those who have been recipients of this grant in the past

(Amount and Number of Grants)
Article 4 The amount of the grant shall be 500,000 yen or less per case.

2 The number of grants awarded each fiscal year shall be 3 or less.

(Application)
Article 5 Applicants must submit the prescribed application form to this academic society.

(Expenses eligible for the subsidy)
Article 6 Expenses eligible for the grant shall be expenses other than the personnel expenses and the like of the researcher himself/herself, and shall include the purchase costs and rental fees for machinery and equipment, travel expenses, consumable supplies costs, honoraria, and the like.

Allocation of indirect costs, etc., to the researchers' affiliated institutions shall not be permitted.

(Grant Payment Period)
Article 7. As a general rule, the execution period for grants received shall be one year.

2 Notwithstanding the preceding paragraph, if the research period spans multiple fiscal years, the approval of the Board of Directors must be obtained in advance.

(Grant Payment Procedures, Etc.)
Article 8. The Secretary-General of the academic society shall submit the received application form to the selection committee.

2 The selection committee shall select the recipients of the grants set forth in Article 2 and report the results to the Board of Directors of the Zoological Society of Japan (hereinafter referred to as the "Board of Directors").

3 The Board of Directors shall determine the grant recipients based on the selection results of the Selection Committee.

4 The Executive Director shall informally notify each applicant of the decisions and amounts.

5 The subsidy shall be paid in full to the subsidy recipient.

Notice of Grant Approval
Article 9. The decision on the grant determined pursuant to the preceding Article shall be notified to the applicant in writing.

(Amendment of Research Plan, etc.)
Article 10. If, after receiving a decision to grant subsidies, a person who has received such decision intends to make significant changes to the research plan or the like, they must obtain the prior approval of the Board of Directors.

(Organization and Storage)
Article 11: A recipient of the grant or their affiliated institution must organize and retain related documents such as receipts and acknowledgments of receipt.

(Income and Expenditure Report)
Article 12: A recipient of the grant must report on the income and expenditure to this academic society at the time requested by this academic society.

Audit
Article 13. When the Chairperson deems it necessary, with the approval of the Board of Directors, they may request a recipient of a grant or their affiliated institution to submit reports regarding accounting and research matters, or may audit the contents of the accounting and research.

(Presentation of research report)
Article 14. The recipient shall present all or part of the research conducted with the subsidy grant at the annual conference or through other means.

2 The abstract of the research report shall be published in the annual conference program or on the website of this academic society.

Publication report
Article 15. A recipient of the grant must clearly state that they received support from this academic society and report to this academic society when publishing or presenting all or part of the research results or abstract related to the grant.

(Achievement Report)
Article 16: Recipients of the grant must report the results and a summary of the research report, along with an income and expenditure report, to this academic society within three months after the end of the research implementation period.

(Revocation, suspension, and return of grant decisions)
Article 17 When a person who has been decided to be granted a subsidy falls under any of the following items, or when that fact is discovered, the Academic Society may rescind the decision to grant the subsidy, suspend the delivery thereof, or demand the return of all or part of the subsidy already granted.
(1) When making a false statement or report
(2) When the targeted research activities, etc., are canceled
(3) When the Board of Directors deems it inappropriate in light of the purpose of these Rules.

2 If any of the grounds set forth in the items of the preceding paragraph occur, the Secretary-General shall report to the Chairperson.

3 Upon receiving the report set forth in the preceding paragraph, the chairperson shall, as necessary, conduct hearings or take other measures with the relevant parties, closely examine the facts regarding the grounds, and decide whether to revoke the decision, suspend the grant, or demand a refund.

Revision and abolition
Article 18. Amendments to and abolition of these Regulations shall be made by a resolution of the Board of Directors.

(Detailed Regulations)
Article 19 In addition to what is provided for in these Rules, necessary matters shall be determined by the Board of Directors.

Supplementary Provisions

1. This Regulation shall come into effect on June 1, 2019.
2. This research grant is funded by a donation from the bereaved family of the late Mariko Myohara, a former member of the Zoological Society, and will be terminated upon the exhaustion of the funds.

Supplementary Provisions

1. This regulation amendment dated July 17, 2019, shall come into effect on July 17, 2019.
2. This revision of the regulations, dated December 13, 2019, shall come into effect on December 13, 2019.
3. This revision of the regulations dated June 13, 2024, shall come into effect on June 13, 2024.
