2016 Narishige Animal Science Promotion Award　

All five applicants for this award met the condition set forth in the selection regulations, which states that "members conducting unique research across all fields of zoology shall be candidates for the Promotion Award," making the selection process a high-level one. As a result of detailed deliberations regarding the applicants' research content, research achievements, and future potential, it was decided to recommend the following one individual to the Board of Directors.

Research topic: "Mechanism of pattern formation and evolution in Drosophila guttifera" 

Reason for nomination: Member Shigeyuki Koshikawa developed a gene transfer technology using transposons in *Drosophila suzukii*. Through this, he successfully identified a novel enhancer that appears to function specifically in the expression of an evolutionary novel trait—a new pigmentation pattern—and further demonstrated changes in the distribution of the morphogen that activates it. This is a breakthrough achievement that identifies the gene regulatory mechanisms driving phenotypic evolution and their molecular-level mechanisms of action, and we determined that he is well-suited as a recipient of this award.
