The International Association for Marine Science and Technology is now holding its main theme, "Recovery of marine living resources through seaweed bed creation and fish farming, strategies, and the aftermath," No.2We are pleased to announce that we will be holding the Marine Science and Technology Information Lecture. While our association has previously focused on research and studies, hosting international conferences, and supporting academic societies, we have organized this lecture starting from this event with the aim of disseminating information related to marine science and technology.

5. Purpose

For years, the loss of marine abundance has been a topic of discussion, and challenges regarding the creation of seaweed beds and the transformation of the ocean into a "marine forest" that serves as a biological habitat are introduced. Among these, the creation of seaweed beds in deep-water areas at the base of offshore wind power systems currently being constructed in various parts of Japan, and the new development of biological habitats, are introduced.

Numerous studies have been conducted so far on installing absorption devices on revetment structures that are continuously subjected to wave energy. This presentation introduces the integration of a wave energy absorption-type breakwater into fish aquaculture facilities, aiming for the efficient use of ports and the securing of marine resources.

15051545Creating seaweed beds using leaf-bowl units and tackling deep-water seaweed beds

The decline of seaweeds, long referred to as barren grounds, is now being compounded by recent warming and pointing to oligotrophication in the ocean, threatening the loss of marine abundance as well. Furthermore, cases have been noted where large algae are declining despite no apparent problems in their growing environment—such as water temperature, nutrient salts, and light conditions—leaving the phenomenon still largely unexplained.

This lecture discusses the decline of these algae, and specifically introduces attempts to transform sandy seabeds into "sea forests" using seaweed by installing specially developed reef-ball-type seaweed bed creation structures on sandy bottoms in Omura Bay and Iki, Kyushu. It also discusses the potential of this technology for creating seaweed beds in deep-water areas, such as around the bases of offshore wind turbines.

Typical wave energy absorbers include methods that convert the motion of an oscillating water column into pneumatic energy, and methods that convert floating body motion into hydraulic energy. Oscillating water column type wave energy absorbers are among those with high absorption efficiency, and theoretical research on them is progressing. Up to now, the authors have clarified the existence of the natural period possessed by the oscillating water column and verified the wave energy absorption efficiency, but there are extremely few examples worldwide where the motion suppression function of floating structures has been applied to fish farming facilities and its practical use examined. Furthermore, the current situation is that oscillating water columns have not yet been applied to seawall facilities or wave-dissipating facilities.

This lecture introduces the development of a wave energy absorption-type breakwater that converts the motion of an oscillating water column into pneumatic energy without using mechanical devices, and which is housed within breakwaters or wave-dissipating facilities, as well as the impact on marine resources when this device is applied to fish farming facilities.
