Title: Embryological description of the benthic ctenophore Coeloplana mitsukuri
Abstract:
Ctenophores, also known as comb jellies, are a phylum of marine invertebrates with gelatinous bodies resembling cnidarian jellyfish. Their eggs are known as mosaic eggs and were once famous material in experimental embryology. Recent genomic studies suggest that ctenophores are the animal group that diverged first from the common ancestor of extant animals, bringing them renewed attention. In this study, aiming to establish a new model species of ctenophores suitable for evolutionary developmental biology research, we focus on a benthic ctenophore species, *Coeloplana komaii*. Based on observations of *Coeloplana komaii* collected in the shallows around the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory over the past two years, we introduce basic information necessary for embryological research.
