The large-scale insect-E. coli experimental evolution project currently underway in this project is reaching a critical stage. There is an abundance of fascinating evolutionary lineages and phenomena—such as evolved symbiotic E. coli that significantly increase host insect fitness, evolved symbiotic E. coli that can proliferate and colonize inside the insect body but show a marked decrease in growth on agar media, remarkable phenotypic changes in the evolved E. coli accompanying symbiotic evolution, and host-side molecules, cellular and organ-level specializations, and specific genes related to symbiosis—creating a situation where our analyses are struggling to keep pace.
We are looking for someone who would enjoy participating in this exciting research, observing the symbiotic evolution unfolding before our eyes and elucidating its mechanisms. We have established a system where postdoctoral researchers can take the lead on multiple interesting phenomena or mutants of their own interest and achieve results as first authors, while simultaneously participating in various other projects as co-authors.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who is enthusiastic about conducting research on microbial genome manipulation systems. This includes applying genome manipulation techniques—such as bacterial whole-genome cloning, synthesis, modification, and transplantation, which were developed using the intracellular parasitic bacterium *Mycoplasma* as a model at the J. Craig Venter Institute in the US—to reduced-genome symbiotic bacteria of insects, as well as functional analysis and conferring functions by introducing bacterial genomes or operons into minimal-genome *Mycoplasma*.
