■ Meeting Overview

Retinal proteins are a group of proteins that have retinal as a prosthetic group. In nature, there are various retinal proteins, such as rhodopsin, which is a photoreceptor protein responsible for animal vision, as well as microbial light-driven pumps, light sensors, and light-driven channels. These play important roles in light information conversion and light energy conversion in animals and microorganisms. Furthermore, retinal proteins are attracting significant interest from an applied perspective as model proteins for G protein-coupled receptors and as primary tools in optogenetics.
The International Conference on Retinal Proteins (ICRP) is the largest international conference in the field held every two years, where a wide range of discussions take place, from the structure, function, and mechanisms of retinal proteins to optogenetic applications.

The 19th ICRP was originally scheduled to be held in June 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after being postponed three times, it has finally come to fruition. Fortunately, there have been very few cancellations from invited speakers from abroad, and under thorough infection control measures, more heated discussions than ever are expected.
