The evolutionary pathway of mammals revealed by mobile genetic elements
(Abstract) Utilizing the characteristic of ”retroposons,” jumping genes that enter the genome during the course of evolution, the precise evolutionary pathways of many mammals have been clarified. Examples include the close relation of whales to hippopotamuses. Furthermore, based on retroposon analysis, we propose a new continent-breakup scenario in which the three major continents of Africa, South America, and Eurasia split almost simultaneously.
