(5) Purpose: In the early Showa period, sea lions from Takeshima were kept in zoos and gained popularity. In 1934, the Osaka Asahi Shimbun, accompanied by a veterinarian from the Osaka Municipal Zoo (currently Tennoji Zoo), stayed on Takeshima for over 10 days to cover sea lion hunting. At that time, it is recorded that Mr. Yoshikazu Hasegawa of the Osaka Asahi Shimbun brought a camera, filmed a 16mm movie, and screened it in Osaka City, but that film had been missing.

Recently, a film believed to be a part of this 16mm film was discovered by chance. This film vividly recorded the scenery of Oki at the time, as well as sea lion hunting conducted on Takeshima and the scenery of Takeshima itself. With the cooperation of the owner, the National Film Archive of Japan, the Japan Institute of International Affairs produced a digitally remastered video of this film, which is currently the only known video record showing pre-war sea lion hunting on Takeshima. Professor Emeritus Takaoh Inoue of Tottori University, who has researched sea lions on Takeshima and analyzed this film in detail, provides a commentary to decipher the daily lives of the people in Oki and Takeshima at the time as told by the discovered film.
