The Science Council of Japan public symposium "The Future Created by Agricultural Science: Green Revolution 3.0" will be held in a hybrid format starting at 13:00 on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
In this symposium, we will review the achievements of agricultural science that supported the rapid population growth of humanity in the 20th century. At the same time, we will introduce the realities and application potential of "biological resources" (such as crops, forests, livestock, marine life, algae, and microorganisms) and "ecosystem services" (such as oxygen supply, carbon sequestration, water cycling, climate regulation, soil formation, genetic resources, pest control, and crop pollination) as being revealed by cutting-edge science. We will then explore how future agricultural science can advance the creation of next-generation food systems in harmony with the 21st-century global environment, the utilization of biomaterials, and nature-positive activities. Furthermore, we will discuss the significance of formulating the vision for "Green Revolution 3.0"—a transformation toward a truly sustainable and healthy society aimed at expanding the domains where human living and economic spheres are supported by renewable bioresources—as well as proposing a paradigm shift toward a diverse, decentralized society and industrial innovation and creation that realize a symbiotic society between humans and nature. In addition, we will discuss the ideal state of agricultural education and research related to these endeavors.
