Title: Diversity, Classification, and Phylogenetic Evolution of Polyclads: With a Particular Focus on Symbiotic Species
Speaker: Aoi Tsuyuki, Ph.D. (University of the Ryukyus / JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow)
Abstract:
Flatworms (Polycladida), as their name suggests, are marine invertebrates with flat bodies, and approximately 1,000 species have been reported worldwide to date. For many species, species identification based on external morphology is difficult and requires specialized knowledge or histological analysis, so our understanding of their diversity remains insufficiently advanced. The presenters have previously conducted comprehensive surveys of Japan's coastal areas and worked to elucidate the diversity of flatworms inhabiting Japan. While most flatworms are free-living, recent surveys are revealing the existence of many species that symbiotically associate with other invertebrates such as octocorals and hermit crabs. In this presentation, we introduce an overview of recent flatworm research, focusing particularly on the diversity and phylogenetic evolution of these symbiotic species.
