Notice of the 87th Seto Marine Biological Seminar
Starting Tuesday, April 23 at 16:00, we will host Hiromi Watanabe from JAMSTEC, who will present her research findings on the evolution of parasitism in stalked barnacles.
It will be held online via Zoom.

Date and Time: Tuesday, April 23, 16:00-17:30
Speaker: Hiromi Watanabe (Associate Senior Scientist, JAMSTEC)
Title: The Boundary Between Attachment and Parasitism: The Example of Goose Barnacles
Abstract:
Barnacles are a taxonomic group of sessile crustaceans known to attach to a diverse range of substrates, from natural to artificial objects. For this reason, the phenomenon of barnacle attachment has attracted attention from the perspective of industrial applications such as anti-fouling. Many barnacle species use living organisms as substrates, and rhizocephalans in particular lead a parasitic lifestyle using their host organisms as a substrate. Such parasitic barnacles are known to have emerged in multiple lineages even among shelled barnacles, making them a noteworthy lineage for elucidating the process of acquiring parasitism. In this seminar, I will introduce Rhizolepas sp., which parasitizes the scale worm Lepidonotopodium casters (or: a golden scale worm) recently discovered in Kagoshima, and discuss the transition process from attachment to parasitism based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of shelled barnacles.
