Coevolutionary Phenotypic Emergence: Elucidation of Molecular Mechanisms of the Extended Phenotype
Invitation to the Kickoff Symposium

We will hold a hybrid kickoff symposium for the Academic Transformation Area (A) "Co-evolutionary Phenotypic Emergence," which started this fiscal year, on Tuesday, August 6th, at Yayoi Auditorium Ichijo Hall, Faculty of Agriculture, The University of Tokyo. At the symposium, along with an overview of this area and introductions to the research content of the planned research groups, we will provide explanations regarding the solicitation of publicly offered research. We cordially invite not only those who wish to participate as publicly offered research projects, but also everyone interested in the "extended phenotype" to attend.

The "extended phenotype" is an interesting phenomenon that attracts the attention of not only researchers but also the general public, and a wealth of natural history research has been accumulated on it since ancient times. However, because the majority of these phenomena are interactions between non-model organisms, molecular-level analysis has been difficult until recently. In this research area, we will conduct studies on the extended phenotype of hosts by endophytes, aiming to identify endophyte effectors, identify the host signaling pathways they intervene in, and elucidate the process leading to phenotypic emergence.

In this research area, all planned and open-call research groups will work together as one to advance "biology expanded to hierarchies beyond individual organisms." If you are interested in the "extended phenotype" or have a research subject that you want to elucidate from the bottom of your heart, we invite you to join our area and thoroughly enjoy the biology of the "extended phenotype" together. Let us create a discipline that understands the diversity of the natural world, from molecules to ecology, beyond the category of the individual. We look forward to seeing you at the symposium.
