Insect science crossing fields and oceans
We organized this symposium to provide an opportunity for everyone to learn about the breadth of insect science, which contributes to our understanding of the diversity and commonalities of living organisms through the study of insects. This symposium consists of four main sections. First, we will report on the activities of the Subcommittee on Applied Entomology of the Committee on Agricultural Science of the Science Council of Japan and the Japan Insect Science Union. In the following academic lecture Part I, entitled "Transcending Fields," we will introduce new fields of insect science created through the integration of different disciplines. In the subsequent academic lecture Part II, entitled "Transcending Oceans," we aim to widely publicize active research on insects inhabiting overseas regions, ranging from Antarctica to the tropics. Along with these academic lecture parts I and II, we will convey the appeal of the 27th International Congress of Entomology (ICE2024 Kyoto, August 25–30, 2024), which will be held in Japan for the first time in 44 years. At the international congress, cutting-edge research presentations will be given by experts on a daily basis, and many events are also planned, including public programs that easily explain the appeal and amazing traits of insects that are familiar to people. Following a general discussion encompassing the above contents, we hope this will be an opportunity for many people to understand the breadth of insect science.
