Since the first conference was held in 2015, the Japanese Society for Zebrafish and Medaka Drug Discovery Research has provided a platform for reporting research outcomes—such as the creation of disease models using fish species like zebrafish and medaka, pharmacological and environmental response studies, and basic research oriented toward drug discovery and testing—thereby promoting the utilization of fish models in disease research, drug discovery, and industrial applications. Fish models are increasingly anticipated as an evaluation system for animal experiments that can replace mammals from the perspective of animal welfare, not only in pharmaceutical development, but also in the development of cosmetics, foods, and supplements, as well as in environmental research. At this research society, many research outcomes focusing on industrial applications by corporate researchers are also presented.

In this research meeting, we will provide a platform for creative discussions from both academic and industrial perspectives on the current status and challenges of developmental research, pharmacological research, disease models, biological manipulation, drug discovery, and toxicity testing using fish. As part of this, Professor Koichi Kawakami from the National Institute of Genetics—who revolutionized zebrafish research by developing genetic modification technology using transposons and is also a world authority on zebrafish bioimaging—will give a keynote address. We have also prepared an Excellent Presentation Award for young researchers and a mixer for participants to interact with one another.
