It is said that the origin of goldfish dates back about 1,700 years ago around the Yangtze River in southern China, when red-colored crucian carp, known as hibuna, were discovered from wild crucian carp. Afterward, through repeated human selection and culling, various goldfish such as the demekin, ryukin, shubunkin, and chotengan were created.Goldfish have a history of only about 1,700 years, so genetically they are very similar. Even so, why do they have such diverse colors and shapes?That was a complete mystery until very recently.

Recent advancements in genome analysis technology and fish developmental research are beginning to shed light on that secret. In this session, two experts will discuss the secrets behind the colors and shapes of goldfish, and we will also introduce the Sakura-chotengan, which was developed at the Aichi Fisheries Research Institute (Yatomi City) and announced this year.
