The 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan will be held at the Waseda Campus of Waseda University (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) for three days from Thursday, September 8 to Saturday, September 10, 2022.
Looking back, the 89th Annual Meeting, originally scheduled to be held in Sapporo in 2018, had to be urgently relocated to Tokyo and changed to a partial format due to the impact of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake. In 2020, the meeting was planned to be held in Yonago, but due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held on a reduced scale online. As the infection situation did not improve in 2021, the meeting could not be held in Yonago for the second consecutive year and instead took place as an online event.
Therefore, the 2022 Waseda Conference will be held in person for the first time since the 90th Conference held at Osaka City University in 2019. Even now, there is still no sign of an end to the global spread of the novel coronavirus infection. However, I imagine that you have overcome this difficult situation through various ingenious efforts in your research and educational environments. The Waseda Conference Executive Committee, consisting of members of the Kanto Branch, is currently working diligently to prepare for the event, assuming that everyone will gather “in person” in Tokyo for the first time in a while.
Proposals for symposia and related meetings will begin accepting registration in February, and general presentations in April, so we ask everyone to please begin your preparations. General presentations will be held as oral presentations. We especially hope that student member will use this as an opportunity to fully convey your research results in a style different from online presentations. While such “in-person” conferences have become established as a format for academic society presentations, for the Waseda conference we would like to try out a new style for future conferences. Taking advantage of the various experiences cultivated through past online formats, and incorporating requests from members, we are planning a trial run of a web-based tool that will enable further discussion before and after the oral presentations.
All venues are in close proximity to one another, including Okuma Auditorium (an Important Cultural Property built in 1927), where the headquarters events, award ceremonies, awardee performances, and general meeting will be held, as well as the reception venue, RIHGA Royal Hotel. While there are numerous lodging facilities throughout Tokyo, particularly along the Tokyo Metro and Yamanote lines, we recommend securing your accommodation and travel arrangements early.
This organizing committee is proceeding with preparations on the assumption of an in-person event. However, please understand that there is a possibility we may switch to an online format depending on the situation regarding viral infections and the like.
