Title: The Cis-Regulatory Code Conserved Over 500 Million Years of Evolution

Abstract: Vertebrate retinal cells are classified into six fundamental groups, whose characteristics have been largely maintained throughout approximately 500 million years of vertebrate evolution. Recent analyses have identified functional genetic markers common across species within each cell group. On the other hand, nucleotide sequences in non-coding regions exhibit a very rapid turnover. In this seminar, using single-cell ATAC-seq, we comparatively analyze the non-coding regions of the retina across six evolutionarily diverse vertebrate species: lamprey, zebrafish, goldfish, chicken, mouse, and human. Through this analysis, we will discuss gene regulatory mechanisms that exist in common across each cell group despite a long evolutionary history, independent of nucleotide sequence conservation.
