Acquisition of diversity in reproductive modes of fishes and the evolutionary dead ends seen behind it
Abstract
The hydrosphere, which covers over 70% of the Earth's surface, contains diverse environments that differ in temperature, salinity, depth, and other factors. Adapting to these environments, fishes have undergone explosive adaptive radiation. With over 30,000 known species, they represent the most successful lineage, comprising more than half of all vertebrates. In response to diverse habitats, fishes have also diversified their reproductive strategies, exhibiting a wide range of approaches from non-guarding, high-fecundity strategies to egg-guarding by parents. To elucidate the molecular basis supporting the adaptation of fishes to reproductive niches, the presenters have thus far conducted research using various fish species and incorporating diverse methodologies. In this presentation, we will first introduce the co-evolutionary process of the egg envelope and hatching in fishes. Next, we plan to discuss the possibility that, despite the diversification of reproductive strategies, the egg-guarding strategy may actually be caught in an "evolutionary dead-end" from the perspectives of gene loss and functional disruption.
