Dear members of the Zoological Society,
The Marine Biological Education and Research Center, Field Science Center, Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University, is implementing the "Specialized Marine Biological Education Program," which provides students with opportunities to receive more practical instruction through participation in collaborative research with invited foreign researchers.
In fiscal year 2025, we will invite Dr. Samuel Abalde Lago (Invertebrate Genome Evolution and Bioinformatics) to the Center to conduct the marine biology educational program "Deciphering Species Diversity and Evolution of Deep-Sea Gastropods from Genomic Information."
Participants will take part in a portion of the joint research currently being conducted by doctoral students and center faculty members, and experience international research exchanges under practical guidance.
In this program, we aim to extract information necessary for phylogenetic analysis (such as mitogenomes and SNPs) from the genomic data of deep-sea gastropods obtained using next-generation sequencers, and, in cooperation with invited researchers, clarify their species diversity and evolution.

We plan to implement the program on the following schedule.
Dates: Monday, July 28, 2025 – Thursday, July 31, 2025
Hiring a researcher: Dr. Samuel Abalde Lago (Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo; former affiliation: Swedish Museum of Natural History)
Target Audience: University and graduate students
Capacity: If there are a large number of applicants, the number of participants may be adjusted.
Content: Meet at the Asamushi Marine Biological Education and Research Center (Asamushi, Aomori City) on Monday, July 28.
Monday, July 28 – Thursday, July 31: Invited researcher lectures, work mainly focusing on genome analysis, etc. - Final day is program summary
*Details will be sent by email after application. A laptop is required for the analysis.
There is no credit accreditation or similar in this program.
In addition, participating students are required to be enrolled in the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkensai) and the Liability Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkennbai).
As a general rule, accommodations during the program period will be at the Asamushi Research Center for Marine Biology dormitory.
The costs include bedding cleaning fee (600 yen, once) and meal provision fee (3,500 yen), etc. (detailed amounts will be communicated by email after application).
