Symposium: What effects do pharmaceutical-derived chemicals present in the environment have on wild fish?

On the afternoon of Saturday, November 25, a symposium titled "What kind of effects do pharmaceutical-derived chemical substances present in the environment have on wild fish?" will be held at Hokkaido University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sapporo.

Pharmaceuticals are essential for treating our illnesses and managing our health. After use, they are transported via sewage treatment plants into aquatic environments. Chemical substances derived from pharmaceuticals in this manner are referred to as "environmental pharmaceuticals." In recent years, it has been pointed out that these chemical substances, acting as emerging environmental pollutants, may affect wildlife inhabiting aquatic environments. However, the types and concentrations of environmental pharmaceuticals present in aquatic ecosystems, as well as their impacts on wildlife, have not yet been thoroughly investigated. In this symposium, we will report the findings obtained through our investigations and experiments regarding the behavior of environmental pharmaceuticals in the natural world and their effects on fish, and we would like to consider with you the ideal role of pharmaceuticals moving forward.
