Dear Members of the Zoological Society of Japan
Hello everyone. We would like to inform you about the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan (Waseda Meeting), which will be held from Thursday, September 8 to Saturday, September 10, 2022. Although this was the first summer in three years without behavioral restrictions, the COVID-19 infection situation, which has become the seventh wave, remains at a high level nationwide, and it is predicted that future resolution will be gradual. We kept you waiting for the decision on the “meeting format” just two weeks away, but we have decided to proceed with an in-person event in accordance with the published program.
Please carefully prepare according to the instructions on pages 10 to 11 of the program booklet, as there are procedures different from usual, such as asking general oral presenters to bring their computers and utilizing Zoom in each session room. We have ensured plenty of capacity in each room to prevent overcrowding. There may be some rooms that feel a bit sparse because they are too large. In such rooms, please liven things up with energetic discussions. Also, as expected, we had to give up the usual “banquet” and switched to an ”information exchange meeting.“ We accepted cancellations, but I am relieved that many people accepted the ”information exchange meeting.“ Until right before the event, we will consider ways to provide food and beverages so that it becomes a place where participants gathering from all over the country can truly exchange information pleasantly. Requiring advance online registration for public events and projects is also a first-time attempt. Additionally, the participation badges we are sending to registered participants include an unfamiliar section printed on them titled "Consent Items Regarding Prevention of Novel Coronavirus Infection," and we kindly ask for your cooperation with this.
In addition to general oral presentations, symposia, and related meetings, the Narashige Symposium at the Important Cultural Property Okuma Auditorium, award ceremonies, the general meeting, award lectures, high school student presentations at the International Conference Center, public lectures, collaborative projects with NHK/NHK Enterprises, the Zoology Plaza, and a corporate exhibition stamp rally where you can win an iPad are waiting for you. In addition to the public programs, please check the web program (Kcon-navi system) to be released soon.
In addition, if the presenter is unable to attend due to testing positive for COVID-19 or being identified as a close contact, please have a co-author make the presentation. If that is also not possible, please contact the organizing committee immediately so that we can discuss alternative measures.
Therefore, at this tournament, while we will implement infection prevention measures at various levels to make an in-person gathering possible, relying on each and every participant for health management, wearing non-woven masks (masks of other materials are not permitted), and checking body temperatures remains fundamental to the success of the tournament. The executive committee will make every effort, so we kindly ask everyone to attend in top physical condition.

Notice of the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan at Waseda University (4th Announcement)

Hello everyone. We would like to introduce the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan (Waseda Meeting), which will be held from Thursday, September 8 to Saturday, September 10, 2022. While the Zoological Society of Japan has always valued direct interaction among people, the Waseda Meeting Executive Committee has aimed for an in-person event, taking seriously the fact that over the past few years, some student members have been graduating with little experience or physical sensation of "real" venue presentations. There will be 424 general presentations, 24 symposia and related meetings, and about 80 high school poster presentations, with approximately 800 pre-registrants. We are currently working on the program booklet and plan to release it on the web in early August. However, with the unprecedented arrival of the 7th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic increasing the risk of infection, we imagine that many of you are concerned about various matters such as presentation styles and travel arrangements. The Executive Committee is considering various countermeasures, including a hybrid format, but at present, our policy is to hold the meeting in person.
However, we plan to adopt a different approach from the conventional one.
1) While major air conditioning renovations and other updates have been completed at the venue, Waseda University, we have established a conference policy that reflects COVID-19 infection prevention rules (such as mandatory mask-wearing and capacity limits in presentation rooms). Hand sanitizer and thermal cameras for temperature checks will also be installed. However, as wise attendees are aware, discovering a fever at the venue entrance is too late to prevent the spread of infection. Therefore, we kindly ask participants to confirm they have a normal body temperature after waking up before coming to the venue. Such cooperation from each and every participant will reduce the risk of infection to others and help alleviate the burden of conference management.
2) Instead of the "social gathering," we will hold an "information exchange meeting" by changing the method of serving food and beverages in order to enable direct interaction among participants. However, if those who have applied for the "social gathering" wish to cancel, we will provide information on the procedure at a later date.
3) Zoom will be used as the presentation tool for oral presentations. Presenters are requested to bring their own computers. The setup requires logging into the Zoom meeting room designated for each venue and sharing your screen, which will automatically project it onto the projector. Since this differs from the conventional presentation style using a laser pointer, those who are not familiar with Zoom are encouraged to practice in advance. (Although Zoom is used, online presentations from outside the venue are not assumed.)
4) Presenters at symposia and related meetings, please check various implementation procedures with the session organizer.
5) We plan to ask participants of public events (such as headquarters projects and public lectures) to pre-register online.
The above details will be announced in due course by the persons in charge of the executive committee.
This announcement was made against the backdrop of the arrival of the seventh wave of COVID-19, but as always, this conference also features fun programs. Applications for the Zoology Plaza will open soon. We apologize for the wait to everyone involved and look forward to your applications. In addition, for the collaborative project with NHK/NHK Enterprises, which is a distinctive feature of this conference, the production staff of "Darwin's Come!" are looking forward to meeting and interacting with members of the Zoological Society. Please bring your research topics to the "Zoology Visualization Consultation Office," which will be open during the conference. We will provide separate information regarding these matters.
It is expected that the COVID-19 infection situation will continue to change moment by moment. Protecting the health of you and those around you is essential. At the same time, the Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan is an important opportunity for researcher interaction. Taking these factors into consideration, the final decision on the conference format is scheduled to be made around August 26. We apologize for the various inconveniences this may cause you, but all members of the organizing committee are striving to make this a meaningful and vibrant conference, and we kindly ask for your understanding and support.

Announcement of the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan at Waseda University (3rd Circular)

Hello everyone. All proposals for symposia and related meetings have been accepted, resulting in a successful lineup of 18 symposia and 6 related meetings and satellite events. I would like to thank all the organizers who submitted proposals. The initial deadline for general presentation registration was May 4th, but to be honest, the initial pace of abstract submissions was slow, so we extended it to Tuesday, June 7th at noon, which is the absolute last minute for program compilation (please note that registration information cannot be modified after June 7th). However, we are happy to report that registrations have increased significantly over the past few days. Thank you very much.
For the headquarters project, we plan to invite Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi to spark a discussion on the question, "Are we truly doing interesting and important work?" In addition, a joint project with NHK Enterprises is currently in preparation for the Waseda convention. I imagine quite a few of you chose the path of zoology, inspired by television programs covering natural sciences. Are you familiar with the show "Darwin's Arrived!"? During the convention, we will open a "Zoology Visualization General Consultation Desk (tentative name)," where the production staff of "Darwin's Arrived!" will accept consultations from you regarding "visualization." They will also provide topics for discussion at the public lecture on the final day, titled "The Future of Environment and Education: A Message from Zoology," as well as educational lectures aimed at high school students and the general public.
Waseda University is proceeding with the renovation of its air conditioning equipment for COVID-19 infection control, and the current seating capacity of each classroom is limited to 50%. Even if this situation continues, we are preparing to hold the event in-person while paying attention to the venue capacity limits. We plan to inform participants of the infection control measures required of individuals at a later date. Even if you feel reluctant about real-world interaction due to the long-standing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, please consider participating in the annual conference for the first time in a while. In addition, the initial deadline for the early registration discount (Tuesday, May 31, noon) is approaching. If your schedule is finalized, please apply. The 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan will be held for three days from Thursday, September 8 to Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Waseda Campus of Waseda University (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo). In addition to general presentations, award ceremonies, award lectures, the general meeting, high school student presentations, and the Zoology Plaza, the event will feature a public lecture titled "The Future of Environment and Education: A Message from Zoology," as well as a headquarters-sponsored special event welcoming Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi, Institute Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology.
I would like to provide an overview of the upcoming registration schedule.

Announcement of the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan at Waseda University (First Circular)

Dear Members of the Zoological Society of Japan
The 93rd Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan will be held at the Waseda Campus of Waseda University (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) for three days from Thursday, September 8 to Saturday, September 10, 2022.
Looking back, the 89th Annual Meeting, originally scheduled to be held in Sapporo in 2018, had to be urgently relocated to Tokyo and changed to a partial format due to the impact of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake. In 2020, the meeting was planned to be held in Yonago, but due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held on a reduced scale online. As the infection situation did not improve in 2021, the meeting could not be held in Yonago for the second consecutive year and instead took place as an online event.
Therefore, the 2022 Waseda Conference will be held in person for the first time since the 90th Conference held at Osaka City University in 2019. Even now, there is still no sign of an end to the global spread of the novel coronavirus infection. However, I imagine that you have overcome this difficult situation through various ingenious efforts in your research and educational environments. The Waseda Conference Executive Committee, consisting of members of the Kanto Branch, is currently working diligently to prepare for the event, assuming that everyone will gather “in person” in Tokyo for the first time in a while.
Proposals for symposia and related meetings will begin accepting registration in February, and general presentations in April, so we ask everyone to please begin your preparations. General presentations will be held as oral presentations. We especially hope that student member will use this as an opportunity to fully convey your research results in a style different from online presentations. While such “in-person” conferences have become established as a format for academic society presentations, for the Waseda conference we would like to try out a new style for future conferences. Taking advantage of the various experiences cultivated through past online formats, and incorporating requests from members, we are planning a trial run of a web-based tool that will enable further discussion before and after the oral presentations.
All venues are in close proximity to one another, including Okuma Auditorium (an Important Cultural Property built in 1927), where the headquarters events, award ceremonies, awardee performances, and general meeting will be held, as well as the reception venue, RIHGA Royal Hotel. While there are numerous lodging facilities throughout Tokyo, particularly along the Tokyo Metro and Yamanote lines, we recommend securing your accommodation and travel arrangements early.
This organizing committee is proceeding with preparations on the assumption of an in-person event. However, please understand that there is a possibility we may switch to an online format depending on the situation regarding viral infections and the like.
